The PATOUNE Protocol

A kit in a drawer does nothing. What works is a short movement, always the same one, always at the same moment. Here is the one we recommend — one minute, outside, before the door opens.

① Rinse

One paw at a time, with plain water. You fill the reservoir at the tap before you leave; when you get back, you press and you brush. Clean water comes out through the bristles, so you are never scrubbing in dirty water. Mud, beach sand, path dust, road salt in winter.

② Look

This is the step everyone skips, and it is the most useful one. While the paw is clean and wet, part the pads and look: a stone lodged in there, a cut, a tick, a grass seed in summer. You see it the same evening instead of three days later.

If anything worries you — a wound, a limp, redness that lasts — that is a question for your vet, not for us.

③ Dry

The big microfibre towel, between the toes, not just over the top. A paw left damp in a fold is unpleasant for the dog, and it still marks the floor.

④ Come in

He crosses the living room, gets on the sofa, and nothing happens. That is the whole point.

The first five days

The paw is the most sensitive part of a dog. Most of them do not like being touched there, so never force it. The progression we suggest:

  • Day 1 — the kit dry, on the floor, he sniffs it. Treat. That is all.
  • Day 2 — you touch one paw with the brush, no water, two seconds. Treat.
  • Day 3 — one paw, with a little water. You stop before he has had enough.
  • Day 4 — the two front paws.
  • Day 5 — all four, in order. Always the same order.

A dog that backs away is not a dog refusing. It is a dog that has not understood yet. Go back to the previous step tomorrow.

What about winter?

Winter is when the habit matters most. Road salt goes down on the pavement, your dog walks through it, and he licks his paws once he is lying down at home. Plain water, outside, before he comes in — that is what the kit is for, and it means nobody has to carry him to the bathroom tap.
